The hourglass…

This was inspired by a Creative Writing Ink photo prompt.

I gaze out beyond the palms, to the beach where we first kissed. The cool breeze on our sunburnt faces as we lay snuggled under the shade of a sea-buckthorn bush, it’s branches swarming with ripe orange berries against the azure blue sky.
It had been a summer of wondrous memories, but today tears spill down my cheeks.

I met you here on this beach, laughing as you disappeared under a wave, popping up again a moment later.
I was sitting in the shallows, the sand trickling through my fingertips when you approached me, hand outstretched, a grin across your starlit face, a tangled matt of blonde hair across your eyes.

All night we danced and giggled as you twirled me around and around, until our feet ached and our hearts sung.
On the sand, you laced your fingers through mine, and we stared up at the velvet night sky. It was then that you told me you had fallen in love, your eyes sparkling like sapphires.
Your words gave me wings to fly amongst the stars.

This morning, as dawn broke, I was woken by the siren call.
And now you are gone, stolen from me.
I gave you my heart.
But it wasn’t enough to save you.
