This was a bit of fun : flash-fiction – Abandoned Toy
From the moment Mummy sewed on my eyes, I knew I was special. She knitted me a red cardigan with brown leather buttons, wrapped me in shiny paper and placed me amongst the other gift-wrapped boxes. When the little girl opened the paper, she cried out in glee, sweeping me up into her arms.
‘Mummy, I love him.’ She said. ‘I will call him George.’
From that day onward, the little girl carried me under her arm everywhere she went. We shared tea parties, danced in muddy puddles and played on the swings together. Every night she would kiss me and tuck me under her arm before she fell asleep.
As the years passed, I ventured out less; my fur now tired and worn. The little girl continued to grow taller until one day she hugged me, then placed me on the shelf with the other toys. ‘I’m too old to have a teddy on my bed,’ she exclaimed.
So there I stayed for many years gathering dust, until one morning, the girl appeared with a black bin liner.
‘I’m sorry,’ she whispered.
Day after day, I sat on a shelf in a charity shop, while shoppers overlooked me.
I’d almost given up hope; when a little girl pointed at me. ‘Mummy, I want the one with the wonky eye.’
A teardrop slipped down my furry cheek as the assistant picked me off the shelf, placing me in the little girl’s arms.
This time I knew I’d found my forever home.
